LPT-Buy Measuring cups with engraved information, not stickers or prints on each measuring tool.

No matter how durable it looks, it will rub off!!! then you can’t tell your 1/3 from your 1/2 and your 3/4 from your cup in a dark cupboard!

YSK that you can play D&D (5E) for free.

Why ysk: Because D&D is awesome, but the price of the products can be prohibitively expensive, especially in this economy. But you don’t actually need to buy any of their products to play. Every one of these links are either completely free, or have plenty of free content.

I’ve posted this before, but I found more content.

WotC (Wizards of the Coast) published the game rules at [https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD\_BasicRules\_2018.pdf](https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf)

There are dice rollers online, like the one at https://rolladie.net/roll-a-d20-die

You can create any type of map you want at https://watabou.itch.io/

[https://www.dndbeyond.com](https://www.dndbeyond.com) is also an incredible resource!

There is also an online tool that allows you to play remotely or in person at [https://roll20.net](https://roll20.net)

There is a soundboard with ambient sounds at https://thaumaturgy.app/

And you can find other games and players at [r/lfg](r/lfg)

There is a ton of content at [https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?filters=0\\\_0\\\_0\\\_0\\\_0\\\_45462\\\_0\\\_0&src=fid45462](https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?filters=0%5C_0%5C_0%5C_0%5C_0%5C_45462%5C_0%5C_0&src=fid45462) , just search in the free section, or the “pay why you want” section, and say you want to pay $0.00 if you need to.

I’m also including a decent first adventure, designed to introduce key concepts to new players https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/225910/phandalin-001-return-to-phandalin . There are a ton of supporting products there if you search for “phandalin” on the “pay what you want” section.

There are ALOT of useful tools at https://www.aidedd.org/en/

Mathew Mercer would also be thrilled to teach you how to run a game at [https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7atuZxmT9570U87GhK\_20NcbxM43vkom&si=zmvkxO5Jaktv2az8](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7atuZxmT9570U87GhK_20NcbxM43vkom&si=zmvkxO5Jaktv2az8)

There is even a D&D MMO at https://www.ddo.com/home

Feel free to post any other resources you know of, and I’ll add them to the list.

LPT: You can make your own “pimple patches” by buying rolls of hydrocolloidal bandages and cutting them to size.

You can buy massive rolls of the stuff for less than $10. You could even buy a star shaped hole-punch if you are really attached to the specific shape. It works just as well or even better than the brand name packs.

LPT if your child or dog has a favorite toy, stuffed animal, whatever, buy at least one extra for when that item is broken, lost or worn out. Hide it in a safe place. Do not assume it will be for sale when/if you need it. Kids and dogs do not understand why their favorite thing went away and hearts get broken 💔

Why YSK: Wikihow is not owned by the same people who own Wikipedia. That is, it’s NOT owned by a nonprofit organization and is in fact run as a for-profit entity. It’s really showing now, since it now requires you to buy a $3.99 per month subscription to read its articles, or at least certain ones.

LPT: Stop giving every service your real phone number/email

I realized recently that half the emails filling up my inbox come from websites i used once and completely forgot about, ordered food, downloaded something, signed up for a free trial, and somehow i'm still hearing from these companies years later. started using separate cloaked email/phone number aliases for different websites. Wish I started doing this before my inbox became a graveyard of forgotten signups.

LPT: Clean your microwave by steaming a bowl of water and vinegar for 5 minutes

Stop scrubbing dried food off the microwave walls.

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with water and a splash of white vinegar. Microwave on high for 5 minutes. Let it sit for another 2–3 minutes with the door closed.

The steam loosens everything. You wipe it down with a paper towel in about 30 seconds. No harsh chemicals, no elbow grease.

YSK that basically every crew-neck collar has a padded side and a non-padded side

Why YSK: It’s very helpful when your shirt tag fades and the front and back are identical. Or the old tag has ripped

I have several shirts like this where before I was checking the bottom inside for the tag because it’s usually on the left. It’s basically an extra strip of fabric sewn over the seam to make the neck more comfortable.

LPT: Delete mobile apps and use the website instead to save storage AND get your life back.

I saw a LPT a month ago about saving space on your phone by deleting mobile apps. I wanted to give two more reasons you should do this.

Reasons to delete app and use browser:

1. Storage

2. Privacy and Ads: When you download an app, you're handing a tech company a blank check to run whatever software they want on your device, be it tracking or ads. When you use the browser, YOU control what code runs on YOUR device, aka you can get browser extensions that block adds and tracking.

3. Less screen time: For media apps like YT, TT and Insta, the browser UI is much less optimized for addictiveness. It will feel clunkier at first, but you will get used to it. And at least for me it's way less addicting.

Reason to keep app:

If you need the app to send you notifications or other service where it must live on device.

YSK that IKEA provides small spare parts for free.

Why YSK: because of specialized screws, dowels, etc. I recently lost a couple of specialized screws for reassembling their daybed. First of all those screws are hard to find but even if you do they cost too much to buy from amazon/ebay. While searching, I found that IKEA actually provides those exact parts. Search using part number. And they deliver it for free as well, at least in the USA.

LPT: Keep a note of things that seem weird at your new job before you get used to them

When you first start a new job you will notice all kinds of things that seem confusing or just plain unnecessary. Weird processes, pointless meetings, extra steps that don’t seem to do anything but after a few months you get used to it all and stop questioning it.

One thing that helped me is keeping a note on your phone of anything that seems odd or doesn’t make sense. You don’t have to bring it up straight away just write it down. Once you’ve settled in and know how things work look back at the list. You might find a few things worth asking about or suggesting a better way to do them.

Its easy to get used to how things are done and forget they could be done differently.

LPT: Spraying with peppermint oil will prevent thousands of dollars in rodent damage to your vehicle

They have super sensitive noses. It basically smells so minty it hurts them. So they go chew something else.

I spray out my engine block once a month ish.

I have done this with every car I have ever owned.

Live in a very high rodent area.

Zero rodent issues with my vehicles.

I mix the oil with soap and water. Shake it up in a spray bottle. Spray until it's empty. About a tablespoon of oil.

Bulk peppermint oil is a lot cheaper than a multi thousand dollar repair bill.

I want to be clear. This has nothing to do with essential oil woo. It literally just smells really intensely bad to rat's/squirrels/mice but not people. That's it. That's the whole thing.

I'm telling you. Take 5 minutes to spray occasionally. It's so much better than waking up to your engine being f\*cked because of a squirrel.

YSK you can easily prove a negative

Why YSK: You've probably seen someone in an online argument pull out the classic "you can't prove a negative" line when they're asked to prove that something doesn't exist. It's a common misconception that sounds plausible at first, but falls apart once you examine it more closely.

Imagine I tell you there's an elephant in your kitchen. You go check, find absolutely nothing, and come back to tell me there's no elephant in your kitchen. Have you just performed an impossible feat of logic? Of course not. You checked, found no elephant, and have pretty good reason to conclude that I'm talking nonsense. Now, if I tell you there's an invisible elephant somewhere in the universe that leaves no trace of its existence, that's a different story. But the problem here isn't that you've been asked to prove a negative. It's that I've made my claim practically impossible to test.

And this is where people get confused. Proving that something doesn't exist in a particular place or under specific conditions is often perfectly straightforward. Proving that something doesn't exist anywhere in the entire universe is obviously a much bigger task. Those are two completely different claims. Here's the real kicker, though: just because you can't disprove something doesn't mean there's any reason to believe it.

I could tell you that there's a tiny, invisible goblin living inside your fridge, and that it teleports away whenever you open the door. You can't prove me wrong, can you? But I suspect you're not about to start leaving offerings next to the milk. The point is, you don't have to disprove every ridiculous claim someone throws at you. Sometimes the person making the claim needs to give you a reason to believe it, rather than expecting you to spend the rest of your life trying to prove them wrong.

So no, you can't always prove a negative. But you absolutely can prove plenty of them.

YSK The burden of proof lies on the party who makes the claim, not on the party who denies it.

Why YSK: The burden of proof lies on **the party who makes the claim** (the person asserting or affirming a fact), not on the party who denies it — captured by the Latin maxim onus probandi incumbit ei qui dicit, non ei qui negat.

This is known as the "burden of proof fallacy". A concerning majority of redditors do not seem to grasp this. Grasping this may lead to more fruitful and productive conversations. Too many instances of an OP making a claim, others refuting, but instead of holding the burden of proof to the original claimant, others ask the one refuting for proof.

LPT - learn to express opinions additively, if it can be read negatively it will be.

I have an aunt I love so much. When we see her, she’ll say “it’s been so long since we’ve seen you!” It isn’t meant to be negative, but it does feel judgmental for how we’re distant and don’t make more effort to travel home. My mom says “I’m so happy to see you” and my cousins express how much easier it is to reconnect with my mom because they don’t need to start with an apology.

But then I just read a bunch of people complaining about a stupid political decision’s outcome. They all agree, but the comment replies that are all in the same direction start with “it’s not that, it’s this” or “worse …”. This makes the poster feel like they’re being argued with - but I’m sure that’s rarely if ever the goal. “And on top of that”, “also”, and “to make it even worse” or even “it’s not just that, it’s also this” is language of support and addition, not confrontation.

Support those going your way, we are better off making friends than putting allies off.

Note: we need a communication flair.

YSK: If your flight in the EU is delayed by more than 3 hours, you may be entitled to €250-€600 compensation

Why YSK: Under EU Regulation 261/2004, airlines must pay compensation for long delays, cancellations and denied boarding, unless it was caused by "extraordinary circumstances" like extreme weather. It also applies to flights leaving the EU and to EU airlines landing in the EU. Many people never claim it. You can claim directly with the airline for free; you don't need to pay a claims company.

LPT: (Small but Mighty) Teach your young kids (3 years and up) to play UNO.

I'm a Special Education teacher and I use UNO a lot in my classroom for my students of all ages but I especially like it for young kids. My own 6 year old is actually asking to play Uno Attack versus asking me to have a turn on the Switch 2.

The game teaches:
Color Recognition
Number Recognition
Working Memory (remembering the rules of each card)
Impulse Control (waiting for his turn and not blurting out his "good cards")
Cognitive Flexibility (adjusting when some changes the color or direction)
Visual Discrimination (looking at all of his cards to see what he can play)
Speech/Communication (announcing "UNO!" and new colors)
Emotional Regulation (he's managing losing, having to draw cards or be skipped)
Problem Solving (Just deciding what card to play )
Social Skills (Taking turns, being kind while playing even if losing etc.)

Theres also a little bit of Occupational Therapy in there too by just trying to manage the cards in their hands and placing them down.

It fairly cheap considering the benefits and they have a lot of licensed character decks now. I like UNO attack for home after dinner and before homework (to get the brain going) but I have the hot wheels deck for on the go.

Bonus: They'll know at least one word in Spanish!

YSK: Professional only means earning a living doing a particular profession. It gives no indication of competency.

Why YSK: If you're a young adult just coming into the world, it's especially important for you to know that someone being a "Professional" gives no indication whatsoever of their skill level.

Professional does not mean expert. In fact, it doesn't even imply that they are even somewhat good at their job. All being a professional implies is that they have the minimum skill set to be able to charge money for a job.

I see many young adults let their guard down because the word "Professional" gives a false indication of competency. It's very important that you research and vet anyone providing you a service, even if they're a professional.

Edit: To all the young people seeing the disparaging comments, just remember there is only one group of people who benefit from telling young people NOT to vet and NOT to research before hiring, and that's the same people that this post is about. They start with the letter H and end with the letter K.

HACKS. Any professional worth hiring won't have a problem with you vetting their services.

LPT: If you’re planning to buy something on Black Friday, write down its price now. Some “deals” are just the regular price with a bigger number crossed out next to it.

Take a screenshot or jot down the current price of anything you’re eyeing. When the sales start, compare. For Amazon, price-history sites like camelcamelcamel show whether a “sale” price is actually low or the same price it’s been for months. You’ll also catch it if something quietly goes up in early November and then gets “discounted” back down to where it started.

YSK: You can skip long intros and outros in songs on Apple Music without editing the actual song.

This has been driving me crazy for years, and I finally figured out how to fix it, so I figured I'd share in case anyone else finds it useful.

You know how some songs have really long intros, maybe a bunch of silence, someone talking, or some other nonsense before the actual music starts? Or maybe there's a long outro you don't want to sit through every time the song comes up in a playlist?

Turns out you can skip all that in Apple Music without actually editing the song.

Just right-click the song in Apple Music on your computer, select Get Info, and go to the Options tab. There are fields for Start and Stop times. Just set those to where you want the song to start and end, and you're done. This will sync across your devices.

Maybe this is common knowledge, but I had no idea it was an option. Wish I'd figured it out years ago.

**Why YSK:** If you listen to a lot of music on shuffle or have large playlists, this lets you cut out unwanted intros, outros, and stretches of silence automatically. You don't have to manually skip ahead every time a song plays, and you don't have to modify the original audio file.

YSK: When honey turns yellow and solid like a paste, you can restore it

Why YSK: The honey is just fine and not spoiled. Just submerge the honey container in a pot of hot water for a few minutes. It will return to its natural liquid state like when you first got it. FYI, honey never spoils and is in fact an effective anti-bacterial agent that can be applied to skin injuries like cuts and scrapes.

Edit: my bad. Not boiling water, just nice and hot to reconstitute the liquid amber state of the honey.

YSK your YouTube Liked videos playlist only ever shows your newest 5,000 likes. You can't scroll past that, but the older ones are still in your Google activity

Why YSK: lots of people use the like button as a bookmark. The Liked videos playlist only ever lists your newest 5,000. You can't scroll past that, there's no warning, and the older videos still show the thumbs up lit. If you've been saving stuff that way for years, your early saves probably aren't in the list anymore and you'd never know.

They're not gone. Go to [ http://myactivity.google.com/ ]( http://myactivity.google.com/ ), then Other activity, then YouTube likes and dislikes. Your likes are listed there by the day you liked them, including the ones the playlist no longer lists.

Quick way to tell if it's happened to you: scroll to the very bottom of Liked videos and look at the oldest one. If it's way newer than it should be, that's this.

YSK about the Matthew Effect: small differences in ability or opportunity can compound over time, while early disadvantages can also compound and become harder to overcome. This can help you stop comparing yourself or your children to people who are further ahead.

**Why YSK:** The Matthew Effect describes how an initial advantage can lead to further advantages over time, while an early disadvantage can make it harder to catch up. The term was inspired by a passage from the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 25:29):

“**For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath**.”

**So constantly comparing yourself or your children to people who are further ahead may be less useful than encouraging progress, curiosity, and effort even when the effort seems small. Small improvements can provide the motivation and practice needed to build further skills.**

YSK: “Stainless steel kettle” doesn't necessarily mean your water only touches stainless steel.

Why YSK: When buying a kettle, we usually look at the main body and stop there. But the part that actually matters for your drink is the water-contact path, every surface your water touches while heating and pouring.

A kettle can have a premium stainless-steel exterior while still using plastic or silicone components inside, such as:

\- The underside of the lid

\- Water-level windows

\- Spout/filter frames

\- Internal seals and joints

\- Some sensor housings

That doesn't automatically mean those materials are unsafe. But if you're specifically trying to minimize plastic in contact with hot water, “stainless steel kettle” doesn't tell you enough. I've started asking a different question:

Instead of “Is this kettle stainless steel?” → “What exactly does the water touch?”

A useful way to check your own kettle is to inspect the lid underside, spout, filter and water-level window. A flashlight can reveal things that aren't obvious from the outside.

I was genuinely surprised when I checked an older kettle and realized that part of its water-contact path was plastic.
