🔊On October 5, 2026, the University of World Economy and Diplomacy hosted a guest lecture by Jean-Marie Paugam, Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organization and former Permanent Representative of France to the WTO.

🔴The event was also attended by Azizbek Urunov, Chairman of the Committee for Food Safety of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

🔵During the event, the participants discussed international trade, the activities of the World Trade Organization, trade and development, food safety, as well as current issues in global economic relations.

☄️The guest lecture provided UWED students with an opportunity to engage directly with leading experts in the field, exchange views on current developments, and deepen their understanding of international trade and the global trading system.

🔴We are honoured to welcome Ambassador Jean-Marie Paugam, Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

🔵Ambassador Paugam has served as WTO Deputy Director-General since 2021. His areas of responsibility include Agriculture and Commodities, Trade and Environment, Human Resources, and Legal Affairs.

🔵Prior to his current position, he served as Permanent Representative of France to the WTO and Deputy Executive Director of the International Trade Centre (ITC) in Geneva. He has also held senior positions in the French Ministry of Economy and Finance and the French Treasury.

☄️Ambassador Paugam brings more than three decades of professional experience in international trade, WTO affairs, trade and development, and international economic relations.

☄️The University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) and the WTO Chairs Programme at UWED invite students from all faculties to apply for selection to the UWED team for the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition.

🟢Participants will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of WTO and international trade law, strengthen their legal research, written advocacy, and oral pleading skills, and work closely with coaches and legal practitioners throughout the preparation process.

📣The selection process will consist of two stages:

🔵Stage 2 – In-person interview and advocacy exercise

🔊On 29 April 2026, the University of World Economy and Diplomacy hosted a guest lecture by Mr. Ridhish Rajvanshi, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL), International Trade Law Consultant and Policy Advisor.

🔴The lecture focused on Trade Facilitation Agreement and Customs Valuation Agreement.

❗️During the session, Mr. Rajvanshi discussed key aspects of WTO rules related to customs procedures, trade facilitation, transparency, predictability and customs valuation. Students had the opportunity to learn how these agreements operate in practice and why they are important for international trade, businesses and governments.

🔵The lecture also provided valuable insights into the role of legal expertise in trade negotiations, customs regulation and the functioning of the multilateral trading system.

🔴In this edition:

🔵Technical regulation reform in Uzbekistan. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed proposals to comprehensively modernize the country’s technical regulation system in line with international standards. Over the past four years, around half of Uzbekistan’s national standards have already been harmonized with international requirements. As part of preparations for WTO accession, the government plans to expand recognition of Uzbek laboratories, adopt thousands of international standards by 2028, and move toward a risk-based market surveillance system.

🔵Central Asia Regional Electricity Market Programme (REMIT). The World Bank has approved a ten-year regional initiative aimed at strengthening energy cooperation in Central Asia. The program will support the creation of the region’s first integrated electricity market, expand cross-border electricity trade, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources.

🔵New GPA thresholds for 2026–2027. The WTO has updated government procurement thresholds under the Agreement on Government Procurement (GPA). These thresholds determine when public contracts must be open to international bidding among GPA members and are revised every two years to reflect currency fluctuations.

🔵New HS-2028 customs codes for health goods. The updated Harmonized System will introduce new tariff headings for vaccines and other essential medical products, improving global monitoring of trade in critical health goods and strengthening preparedness for future health emergencies.
