How one should prepare for an unconventional paper like that of 2026?

Well, it’s a long discussion, but for now, let’s just discuss an important pillar with an example.

Just war theory is an important topic in International Ethics, but if you look closely, the learnings from these principles can be used in a much wider context. - A skill that requires absolute conceptual clarity.

And that’s the reason I have been teaching Just war theory in my case study orientation session, and wherever it was not possible due to program constraints, I have always clubbed the discussion on Just war theory with law and order management, whistleblowing, etc., to highlight applications of the learnings.

This skill—to see application underneath the iceberg of concepts—becomes even more important in unconventional papers like this year. It will help in not just reducing cognitive load of learnings but also in identifying thematic patterns in application.

Once you develop it, the skill liberates you like anything and allows you to express and innovate in exam-like conditions.

Dear students, this year’s ethics paper again re-emphasises on conceptual clarity and the ability to apply ethical principles in real life scenarios.

I have been telling you again and again that Ethics is not about content accumulation alone ( definitions, elaborate examples etc ). As you can see in this paper also, how that approach won’t help you in generating arguments in such papers.

In this video , I have analysed Section A of Ethics paper which was more challenging for the aspirants.

After watching the video, I am sure you will have greater clarity about how Ethics should be approached .

Quick Tips for Tomorrow`s ethics paper

1. Don't compromise Section A for case studies , both are equally important. If questions are lengthy and multiple statement based, break them into parts and assign weight as per the actual “questions/sub parts asked”

2. UPSC may throw suprises with terms (e.g. moral intuition vs moral reasoning etc)..don't be discouraged by such questions. They are equally tough for everyone. Just apply your presence of mind ( like you do in prelims paper, there also similar questions come )..break the term, think around it's constituents, nature, strength/weaknesses, application, relevance, examples etc and you will have a decent answer.

3. Don't waste time over any quote based questions/case studies which you don't understand properly.

4. Don't just dump examples and definitions, especially in analytical/argumentative questions. As far as possible give reasoning (need not write full sentences if you can convey the meaning)

5. If the case studies are of similar nature, try to connect keywords/arguments with the subject matter of the case study to make it specific. (this should be done generally also but more so in the similar case studies.

6. Read questions very very carefully & identify its various parts, especially if the question is very lengthy (even at the cost of writing a lesser number of points). You will not get marks if you don't address the demand of the question.  

7. Try to write examples at least for the initial few points/arguments of every section/subsection of the question.

8. Easy questions are the most difficult to score as differentiation becomes difficult. Please do ensure value addition (case studies, current examples & diagrams ) and depth in dimensions .

Messages like these give teachers courage to experiment and push boundaries when it comes to mentorship.

Please allow me to give you a mentor’s perspective.

When I was planning Mini Tests for the Ethics Marks Maximisation Program, I thought of including some different types of questions as I thought UPSC may change the form of the questions this year. (Given the context of prelims 2026).

And to tell you honestly, I was in a dilemma as

A) students may not appreciate ‘different types of questions’ going beyond what UPSC has asked traditionally in PYQs. Given the enthusiasm of keyboard warriors, the risk of unwarranted criticism and being misunderstood was real and grave.

B) The pain of writing unconventional questions may dent the confidence of the students. In fact, I got this feedback from many students who said, sir aapke tests bahut tough hain …and I would say, it is better that you feel the heat now than in the mains exam.


At times, we may have to choose the risk of avoidable criticism over the poisonous comfort that just provides a feel-good factor to students. It would have been far more easier for me to give a collection of keywords or routine questions that anyone can get from ChatGPT, but that would be just harakari in the name of teaching.


IMHO, content collection and doling it out in PDFs is not teaching.

But then when I got such numerous messages from the students after the mains exam, I felt so happy that I consciously made that choice— the choice to make students go through difficult and unconventional questions.
